Bedlington Terrier Being Brushed With A Blue Slicker Brush

Bedlington Terrier Grooming

Grooming your Bedlington Terrier is essential for maintaining their health and keeping them looking their best. Here we'll explain the basics of how to do a pet groom for your Bedlington Terrier.

Regular grooming is the compromise to having a dog that does not shed.

The Bedlington Terrier is unique because it doesn't shed, yet demands consistent grooming. The coat requires backward brushing starting from the toes and moving up to the nose. Failure to maintain it can lead to tangles and discomfort.

For new puppies, good breeders may have already conducted the initial bath, clip, and nail trim around 6 weeks of age. However, if not, it's vital to start grooming early. Puppy fur is prone to knotting, so don’t let it grow out excessively and brush them everyday.

Note: If you take your Bedlington puppy to a professional groomer, many do not have vast experience with this unique breed.  You may be advised that they cannot provide a full groom until 6 months old as it will damage their coat.  This is simply not true for Bedlington's.  It is safe to groom a Bedlington from 6 weeks old without detriment to the coat growth or pigment.

TOOLS NEEDED:

  • Professional Electric Clippers – Invest in a good set.  Andis or Heineger are recommended. This will be your priciest buy, but quality matters.

  • Clipper Blades – Get a No. 10 (commonly included with clippers) and a 5F blade for a polished finish.

  • Scissors – Obtain a pair of dog-specific scissors around 7” and another smaller pair.

  • Nail Clippers for Dogs

  • Slicker brush and a Metal Fine/Coarse Comb (both wide-toothed and narrow ends).  Dogs do need to get used to the sensation of a slicker brush on their skin.  Buy a smaller or puppy specific one for puppies who are being introduced to grooming.

  • Ear Plucking Powder and/or Ear Forceps – Helps in cleaning and removing hair from the ear canal, which is crucial for hygiene as they don't shed hair this also includes inside their ears.

  • Optional: Grooming Table with H Bar or Arm – Using a grooming arm can aid in managing your dog during grooming. If unavailable, consider a non-slip mat (a bath mat is ideal) for the dog to stand on.

GROOMING STEPS:

Pre-Grooming: Brush, comb, bathe, and fluff-dry the coat. Start fluff drying at the feet and work your way up, using gentle brushing strokes while drying. This dries the coat straight and makes it easier to clip.

Important: Regularly check clipper blades, by testing them on your face (not the backs of hands) to ensure they aren't hot and they don’t overheat. Maintain a flat blade against the dog's body.

  • Tail: With the No 10 blade, trim the tail’s top, from tip to roughly 2” below. Ensure it's cleaned around the base. For a different look, excess hair can be scissor-trimmed.

  • Private Areas: Use the No 10 blade for cleaning around the genitals to prevent odour.

  • Face: With the dog's side facing you, hold the ear back gently. Use No 10 blade to trim from the inner ear edge to near the eye. Follow the illustrated guide to achieve the distinct Bedlington facial look.

  • Ears: Be gentle and aware of the 'flappy' part on the ear. Aim for the characteristic diamond-tassel look.

  • Neck & Body: Follow the photos to clip the front, neck, and sides to attain the signature Bedlington shape.

  • Feet: Depending on your choice of tool, trim in-between toes and pads. Clip the nails with care.

  • Legs: Achieve a cylindrical shape for the front legs. Use brushing and scissoring to blend the leg fur with the body.

  • Head & Topknot: Brush all the hair forward, then trim to reveal the nose tip.  Brush the hair to the side and scissor to achieve the classic Bedlington 'Mohican' look.  Use the below guide to help with the shape.
